Get that ‘sound on’ sticker ready.
Good news people – you’ll no longer see the ‘Instagram Music is not available in your region’ pop-up when scrolling through Instagram Stories as Facebook Canada has finally launched the music function for its users in the North.
Announced at an intimate media gathering in Toronto’s west end last night, the new rollout (side note: we will never not hear this word in Eugene Levy’s voice anymore) allows users to add songs and lyrics to photos and videos. The new function features a variety of options for lyrics display, all of which can be resized like regular stickers. There is also a new music questions sticker available that allows followers to respond with a song from the Instagram music library.
In addition to a roster of international artists, users can also feature music from Canadian musicians on their Instagram Stories. Featuring local talent was particularly important to the company. Indigenous hip hop stars Yung Trybez and Young D of Snotty Nose Rez Kids said in a statement, “We are working to bring a voice to Indigenous experiences to empower our youth, and to ensure greater representation in music here on Turtle Island (Canada) and around the world. We’re excited to see Facebook and Instagram launch these new tools and provide a platform for us to better reach and connect with our fans.” For Quebec pop singer Marie-Mai, the new feature allows her “to connect more deeply with fans [and] gives my music a platform to be heard around the world.”
The music feature is also available on Facebook, and stories shared across the two platforms will be able to have the same song. Facebook users will also be able to pin songs to the top of their profiles.
